A superb unbroken stand between Jacques Kallis and Robin Uthappa led Bangalore Royal Challengers to a nine-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in an Indian Premier League clash on Sunday.
After winning the toss at the Wanderers and opting to bat, Mumbai recovered from a poor start to reach 149-4 and in reply, Bangalore made 150-1 with 11 balls to spare. Kallis got off to a cracking start after fellow opener Wassim Jaffer had fallen early on and although he slowed, still reached his half-century off 39 balls. Uthappa was even quicker, making his fifty off 36 deliveries. The pair shared 126 runs for the second wicket with Kallis 69 not out from 59 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Uthappa was unbeaten on 66, having faced 42 deliveries in an innings that included eight fours and two sixes. Bangalore seamer Dillon du Preez, who returned with 3-32, got his IPL debut off to a dream start, bagging three wickets before conceding a run. Mahela Jayawardene struck an unbeaten 52 to guide Kings XI Punjab to a nail-biting six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League at Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
The Sri Lankan batsman hit seven fours in his 41-ball knock as Punjab surpassed Kolkata's competitive 153-3 in a last-ball finish at St. George's Park. Needing seven from the final over by Kolkata paceman Ajit Agarkar, Jayawardene hit a four while Irfan Pathan (19 not out) fetched the winning runs for Punjab. The victory helped Punjab climb to the second position in the points table while the struggling Kolkata continued to languish at the bottom with their sixth defeat from eight matches. The Yuvraj Singh-led Punjab have now won four of their seven matches in this Twenty20 competition. Shadab Jakati took four wickets Saturday to help give the Chennai Super Kings an 18-run victory over the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.
Jakati, a 28-year-old Indian left-arm spinner, varied his deliveries with devastating effect and allowed just 24 runs as Delhi were restricted to 145-8 in reply to Chennai's 163 all out. He struck with the key wickets of David Warner (51), Dinesh Karthik (52), Tillakaratne Dilshan (13) and Pradeep Sangwan for a duck. Earlier, Subramaniam Badrinath top-scored with 45, Suresh Raina added 32 and Matthew Hayden had 30 to give Chennai a competitive score at the Wanderers. Rajasthan Royals staged a dramatic fightback to upset table-toppers Deccan Chargers by three wickets in their Indian Premier League match at Johannesburg on Saturday.
Defending a competitive 141-5, Deccan looked set for victory when they reduced Rajasthan to 3-3 in the second over but some sloppy efforts in the field saw the defending champions steal a sensational win with two balls to spare. It was only the second defeat for Deccan from six matches while Rajasthan registered their third win from seven outings to throw open the tournament. Charismatic all-rounder Yusuf Pathan, tactically brought down to number eight in the batting order, once again did the trick, hitting 24 from 14 balls with two fours and two sixes. Pathan, named man of the match, came in with Rajasthan needing 49 from 35 balls but reduced the asking rate to a mere 11 from 12 balls. Roelof van der Merwe scored 35 runs and took two wickets Friday to steer the Bangalore Royal Challengers to an eight-run win over Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League.
The South African allrounder hit three sixes and three boundaries to help Bangalore to 145-9, dominating a 44-run partnership with Praveen Kumar (nine not out) after Bangalore was in trouble at 84-6. Van der Merwe then took 2-22 off three overs as Punjab was held to 137-7 at Kingsmead. Punjab needed 13 runs from the final over, but Kumar had Irfan Pathan caught on 12 by Virat Kohli off a full toss and bowled Piyush Chawla for three on the penultimate ball of the match. Kumar finished with 2-27, while captain Anil Kumble claimed 2-25. Yuvraj Singh scored 50 for Punjab to add to his earlier hat trick to win the man-of-the-match award. Yuvraj hit three boundaries and four sixes in 34 balls, sharing an opening stand of 70 with Karan Goel (20 off 29 balls) before he was dismissed by Kumble attempting to sweep a full toss to be caught by Kallis at deep mid-wicket in the 10th over. J.P. Duminy hit 52 not out and fast bowler Zaheer Khan took 3-31 Friday to steer the Mumbai Indians to a nine-run win over the last-place Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Duminy smashed four sixes in 37 balls and helped lift Mumbai from 74-4 in the 12th over to 148-6 at Buffalo Park. Mumbai then restricted Kolkata to 139-6, with Khan bowling openers Sourav Ganguly and Chris Gayle in the first three overs. The left-arm India seamer dismissed Ganguly for 0 on the fourth ball of the innings after the opener hit the ball onto his stumps. Gayle then bottom-edged a slower delivery from Khan 10 balls later, and Kolkata was 8-2. Kolkata recovered after a third-wicket partnership of 89 between Brad Hodge (73) and Morne van Wyk (32). Hodge blasted five fours and three sixes in 60 balls, while Van Wyk hit three boundaries in 35 balls. Van Wyk was caught by Duminy in the deep off medium-pacer Graham Napier to leave Kolkata on 97-3 in the 15th over. Laxmi Shukla was bowled by Khan after missing a full toss 22 runs and three overs later. Hodge was dismissed in the 19th over, run out by Duminy's throw to wicketkeeper Pinal Shah. Needing 19 runs in the final over, Brendon McCullum was caught in the deep by Lasith Malinga off Abhishek Nayar for 5 to end the chase. An unbeaten half-century from Tillakaratne Dilshan helped the Delhi Daredevils inflict a first Indian Premier League defeat of the season on the Deccan Chargers with a comfortable six-wicket victory in Pretoria.
The Sri Lanka batsman paced his innings superbly and was given good support from Dinesh Karthik (41) to help Delhi easily chase down their 149-run target with more than an over to spare. Their performance came after Dirk Nannes and Ashish Nehra had earlier claimed two wickets apiece to restrict the table-topping Chargers, who had Dwayne Smith (48) to thank for helping them reach a competitive total. Kings XI Punjab handed Mumbai Indians their third defeat in five matches by defending a low total and eventually scoring a three-run win in a thrilling Indian Premier League match in Durban.
Kumar Sangakkara had helped himself to an unbeaten 45 (44 deliveries), showing superb temperament in the face of a strong bowling from the Indians as the Kings XI made a meagre 119 for eight, batting first. Jean-Paul Duminy had kept Mumbai in the hunt with a superbly crafted 59, but his departure in the final over, bowled by Yusuf Abdulla, helped Kings XI run out winners. Mark Boucher hit an unbeaten 25 off 13 balls as Bangalore Royal Challengers posted an exciting five-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League at Durban on Wednesday.
Kevin Pietersen's Bangalore needed 10 in the last over to achieve a 140-run target before Boucher smashed spinner Chris Gayle's penultimate delivery for a winning four to help his team register the second victory in six matches. Kolkata have so far won only one of their six games. Teenager Shreevats Goswami also played a big role in Bangalore's victory, top-scoring with 43. The 19-year-old opener hit six fours in his 46-ball knock. Australian spinner Brad Hodge put pressure on Bangalore with three wickets, but South African wicket-keeper Boucher batted sensibly in the crucial last over to steer his team home. Yusuf Pathan clobbered an unbeaten half-century as the Rajasthan Royals got their stuttering campaign back on course by defeating the Delhi Daredevils by five wickets in an Indian Premier League fixture at the Centurion.
AB de Villiers' half-century was the highlight off a relatively unspectacular Daredevils batting card, his knock helping Virender Sehwag's side finish with an unflattering 143 for seven. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra then kept the Daredevils in with a chance as he wrecked the Royals' middle-order with three quick wickets, the Royals crashing to 64 for five, but Smith played a steady hand and Yusuf's whirlwind knock eventually turned the game the Royals' way. Rajasthan needed 48 off the last five overs, but fluent batting from Smith (unbeaten on 44) and Pathan (62 from 30 deliveries) kept the run rate from burgeoning. Yusuf then clobbered Mishra for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries in the leg-spinner's final over - in which he conceded 18 runs - as the Royals were left needing less than a run a ball from the last three overs. Yusuf eventually finished off the game with a boundary, helping his side over the line with 1.3 overs to spare. Senior pros Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya produced vintage strokeplay to give Mumbai Indians a key victory in the Indian Premier League on Monday.
The ageing duo hammered 127 for the first wicket from just 12.2 overs as Mumbai scored 187-6 in 20 overs after electing to take first strike and then bowled out Kolkata Knight Riders for 95 in 15.2 overs. The massive 92-run victory took Mumbai's tally to five points from four matches, putting them in third place behind leaders Deccan Chargers (eight points) and Delhi Daredevils (six). Tendulkar, the world's leading Test and one-day batsman who has voluntarily opted out of India's Twenty20 squad, smashed a brilliant 68 off 45 balls. Jayasuriya, who turns 40 in June, hammered 52 off 32 balls with two fours and four sixes as the veterans turned the clock back in a breathtaking display of attacking batting. Kolkata's chase faltered early when skipper Brendon McCullum was dismissed by Lasith Malinga in the second over and West Indian captain Chris Gayle fell to team-mate Dwayne Bravo in the third. Brad Hodge (24) and Sourav Ganguly (34) were the chief contributors to Kolkata's meagre total as Lasith Malinga and Abhishek Nayar scalped three wickets each. While Gibbs carried his bat and smashed the final-over six that effectively settled the contest, he put the focus on Gilchrist's 44 off 19 balls as the contribution that set up Deccan for victory. Gilchrist himself looked at the whole team effort, not least the bowlers who restricted Chennai to 165 for six after a strong start of their own. Tillakaratne Dilshan smashed a quickfire half-century to power Delhi Daredevils to a six-wicket win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.
The Sri Lankan cracked two sixes and five fours in his 47-ball 67 not out as Delhi achieved a 150-run target with four balls to spare for their third win in as many matches. Kevin Pietersen-led Bangalore have so far posted just one victory in five matches. Dilshan steadied the innings after the early dismissals of openers Virender Sehwag (seven) and Gautam Gambhir (16). He put on 44 for the unfinished fifth wicket off just 22 balls with Mithun Manhas (23 not out). The Sri Lankan reached his second half-century of the tournament in style, hoisting South African Jacques Kallis for a six. AB de Villiers was the other notable contributor for Delhi with 21. Bangalore's chances of setting a stiff target receded when well-set Pietersen (37) was bowled attempting a switch-hit off New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori in the 10th over. Pietersen, who smashed two sixes in his 25-ball knock, put on 62 for the third wicket with New Zealander Ross Taylor (31) after openers Kallis and Robin Uthappa were dismissed in the opening two overs. South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher hit two sixes in his 28-ball 36 and added 61 for the fifth wicket with Indian Virat Kohli (22). Steady rain caused the abandonment of the Indian Premier League match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders without a ball bowled at Newlands.
It was the second match to be washed out in eight days during the tournament which was switched at short notice from India to South Africa. Rain fell throughout most of the day and it never seemed likely that play would get under way. But players and a handful of spectators were kept waiting for two hours 45 minutes after the scheduled start before the umpires decided that it would not be possible to play even the minimum number of five overs a side. A spinning masterclass from Pragyan Ojha and disciplined back-up from Venugopal Rao ensured Deccan Chargers consolidated their position at the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table with a 12-run victory over Mumbai Indians at Durban on Saturday.
Chasing 169, Mumbai looked destined for victory when they entered the final 10 overs of their innings needing 85 to win with nine wickets in hand and star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and JP Duminy at the crease. But Ojha's 3-21 swung the match as he had Tendulkar caught at short extra cover by Herschelle Gibbs for 36, then removed Shikhar Dhawan and Duminy (47) in consecutive overs. Fellow spinner Rao squeezed the batsmen at the other end, allowing just 21 runs from his first three overs as Mumbai managed a meagre 24 runs in the five overs after the 'strategy break'. Dwayne Bravo and Harbhajan Singh led spirited resistance, but when Fidel Edwards removed fellow West Indian Bravo for 21, Mumbai's fate was sealed and they ended their innings on 156-7. An opening stand of 63 between Adam Gilchrist and Gibbs set Chargers up for a big total after they won the toss and elected to bat under sunny Kingsmead skies. Even after Gilchrist had fallen for 35 to the bowling of Bravo, Gibbs continued the assault on Mumbai's bowlers with Dwayne Smith as Deccan reached 124-1 in the 13th over. But when Smith was bowled by Sanath Jayasuriya for 35, his dismissal instigated a collapse and none of the batsmen who followed reached double figures. Top scorer Gibbs was run out for a feisty 58 as Deccan made 168-8 in 20 overs. Put into bat, Rajasthan Royals had earlier managed 150 for six, a total they owed largely to Yusuf Pathan (42) even though it was Abhishek Raut (21 not out) who provided the late charge for them. Chasing a victory target of 151, Chris Gayle (41) sizzled at the top while Sourav Ganguly (46) too shone as the Knight Riders managed exactly 150 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. In the 'Super Over', Knight Riders managed 15 runs off Kamran Khan's over with Chris Gayle scoring 13 off it before being dismissed in the final ball. Victory maintained the 100 percent record of Delhi while Chennai suffered their second loss in three matches in a tournament switched to South Africa because a clash with Indian general elections created security concerns. Matthew Hayden hit 65 off 35 balls and man-of-the-match Muttiah Muralitharan claimed 3-11 on Monday to lead the Chennai Super Kings to a 92-run victory over the Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League.
Set a daunting target of 180, Bangalore slumped to 87 all out after Hayden's aggressive stroke play - which included nine fours and two sixes - put Chennai in charge. Bowling beautifully on a turning pitch, the Sri Lankan spin master had Robin Uthappa (20) stumped by wicketkeeper Dhoni, trapped Bangalore captain Kevin Pietersen leg before for a first-ball duck and had Rajesh Bishnoi (0) caught by Lakshmipathy Balaji. Bangalore had struggled from the onset as they sought to chase the highest score so far in the tournament and lost their first wicket in the very first over as Praveen Kumar (0) - who opened both the bowling and batting for Bangalore - was bowled by Manpreet Gony. Jacques Kallis took advantage of some wayward bowling by the Chennai seamers to give a semblance of respectability to Bangalore's innings, hitting five fours on his way to his 24, before being caught lbw by a full length delivery from Albie Morkel. Robin Uthappa (20), Rahul Dravid (20) and Virat Kohli (11) were the only other Bangalore batsmen to reach double figures. Earlier, Chennai's openers laid a solid foundation with Hayden and Parthiv Patel (30) putting on 106 in 10 overs for the first wicket. Fast bowler Praveen Kumar was the pick of the Bangalore bowlers taking 2-37. Old pros Rahul Dravid (66) and Anil Kumble (5/5) put up sparkling performances as Bangalore Royal Challengers inflicted a humiliating 75-run defeat on defending Champions Rajasthan Royals at Cape Town.
Set to chase a modest 134, Rajasthan Royals folded up for just 58 runs- the lowest in the IPL so far- inside 16 overs as Royal Challengers bowled a tight line throughout the innings and did not let the opposition to take control at any point of the match. While Royal Challengers' last season's captain Dravid played some delectable strokes to a magnificent 66 off 48 balls, his statemate Kumble came good with the bowl as he claimed the tournament's first five-wicket haul to make things worse for Royals. RR v RCB, Match 2: Royal Challengers Bangalore 133-8 (20.0 ovs) beat Rajasthan Royals 58 (15.1 ovs) by 75 runsMI v CSS, Match 1: Man of the Match Sachin crushes Dhoni's ChennaiApr 18, 2009
Sachin Tendulkar hit an unbeaten half-century as he led the Mumbai Indians to a 19-run win against the Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the Indian Premier League at Newlands on Saturday.
Tendulkar's 59 not out provided the foundation for Mumbai's 165 for seven after they were sent in on a blustery, grey day. Former Australian opening batsman Matthew Hayden hit 44 and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni 36 for Chennai but the 2008 runners-up could only manage 146 for seven. Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga bowled superbly to take three for 15 in four overs for Mumbai. MI v CSS, Match 1: Mumbai Indians 165-7 (20 ovs) beat Chennai Super Kings 146-7 (20 ovs) by 19 runsRR v RCB, Match 2: Warnie's Jaipur face Pietersen's Royal ChallengersApr 18, 2009
Hampshire mates Shane Warne and Kevin Pietersen share goes back a long way, but nothing can quite suppress the fierce competitor that resides in each of them.
The duel between defending champions Team Jaipur and Royal Challengers may well come to be decided by a fierce face-off between the two pals. While Warne's Jaipur have a reputation to defend, Pietersen, taking over the reins from Rahul Dravid and available only for the first couple of weeks, will want to make an impression right away. Royal Challengers, the ultimate under-achievers of the inaugural edition, may well come up with something special this time around. Team Jaipur, in contrast, showed last season how to maximize potential but Warnes young brigade will be playing in conditions which are pretty much alien to it. The likes of Swapnil Asnodkar and Ravindra Jadeja have no experience of playing on such bouncy tracks and it would be interesting to see what they come up with against the likes of Dale Steyn running in at full steam. In a warm-up match here last weekend, the team has already found out how life on the on the Newlands pitch can be. It will also be interesting to find out how the youngsters carry their new status. This time, they start as front-runners and will have to survive the push from others trying to overtake them. MI v CSS, Match 1: Sachin's Mumbai take on Dhoni's ChennaiApr 18, 2009
Dhoni, leading Team Chennai, has to face the wrath of the Little Master, when they take on Mumbai Indians in the opener of IPL 2 in Cape Town.
What makes it all the more interesting is the fact that Tendulkar has already announced that he won't play international T20 cricket while Dhoni had proved himself as a skipper for the first time in South Africa two years back, leading India to the World T20 triumph. T20 is easily Dhoni's bastion and if Tendulkar can inspire his team to a win against Team Chennai, the Little Master can afford a quiet smile of satisfaction. And Tendulkar has got all the ammunition in the world to turn the heat on last year's runners-up. A supreme opening partner in Sanath Jayasuriya, a solid middle-order led by the stylish South African batsman JP Duminy, and a decent pace-attack led by the in-form Zaheer Khan. All that has created a buzz around the Mumbai Indians. It's likely that allrounder Dwayne Bravo and medium-pacer Kyle Mills will fill up the other two foreigner's slot in the Mumbai outfit. But if Mumbai are blessed with balance, so are Team Chennai. Matthew Hayden's retirement from international cricket has come as a big boon for Dhoni's men and the burly Aussie has to play a huge role at the top of the order if Chennai are to do well in South African conditions. Hayden knows all about playing on these tracks and it's pretty obvious that the Chennai top-order will look to play around him. Another trump-card for Dhoni is Andrew Flintoff, provided he is 100 per cent fit. The England allrounder is available only for a couple of weeks and Chennai will expect to get the best out of him in this period. Flintoff, of course, will be backed by another superb all-rounder in Albie Morkel, who is in great touch at the moment. The duo will lead the Chennai bowling attack as well, but it'll be interesting to see how well they're backed up by the likes of Lakshmipathy Balaji and MS Gony. Dhoni also has the guile of Muttiah Muralitharan to fall back upon, but it's to be seen whether he is able to work his magic in the shortest format of the game in South African conditions. Pak players want to take part in IPLApr 07, 2009
Pakistani players have expressed their desire to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the tournament’s shift from India.
According to The News, some players have approached the IPL management through e-mails, but have not received any reply. It is, however, highly unlikely that IPL franchises would recall Pakistan players, as they had earlier refused to play in the league when it was being held in India following a call from their government. Players have now threatened to take the IPL to court if they are not included in the league’s second season. Sources said the players have demanded that they be included in the tournament as it is now being held in South Africa. Players are demanding that they be paid for the entire duration of their three year contract although they only served one year. Earlier, captain Younis Khan had also threatened to sue the cash rich league. Several star players like Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, and Salman Butt featured in the IPL’s inaugural season last year. Sony bags IPL TV rightsMar 26, 2009
In the biggest-ever deal in the sporting history of India, Multi Screen Media and World Sport Group have bought the telecast rights of the Indian Premier League for a whopping Rs 8,200 crore (around $ 1.63 billion) for a period of nine years.
Multi Screen Media (Sony), which had bought the rights in the inaugural season for $ 1.1 billion, shelled out more than half a billion dollars this time to acquire the rights. MSM had earlier dragged IPL to court after it had terminated the existing contract, signed last year, and sold it to WSG Mauritius. MSM earned handsome revenues from the 45-day extravaganza last season. But it will be interesting to see how hard it sells the slots this time, given that media planners are already demanding a cut in rates. IPL schedule announced, final at JohannesburgMar 26, 2009
