2009 DLF Indian Premier League: Latest NewsSony bags IPL TV rightsMar 26, 2009
In the biggest-ever deal in the sporting history of India, Multi Screen Media and World Sport Group have bought the telecast rights of the Indian Premier League for a whopping Rs 8,200 crore (around $ 1.63 billion) for a period of nine years.
Multi Screen Media (Sony), which had bought the rights in the inaugural season for $ 1.1 billion, shelled out more than half a billion dollars this time to acquire the rights. MSM had earlier dragged IPL to court after it had terminated the existing contract, signed last year, and sold it to WSG Mauritius. MSM earned handsome revenues from the 45-day extravaganza last season. But it will be interesting to see how hard it sells the slots this time, given that media planners are already demanding a cut in rates. IPL schedule announced, final at JohannesburgMar 26, 2009

The tournament will now be held between April 18 and May 24, which will feature 59 matches. IPL organisers took the decision after consultations with the Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Officer Gerald Majola. The IPL Commissioner believed that it was a hard decision to take IPL out of India. The six venues, where matches are scheduled to play, are yet to decide. Matches would start at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. IST. Modi said that he would like to build up its fan base in South Africa. Earlier in the day, it was decided to give the opportunity to host the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to South Africa. This year's Indian Premier League cricket tournament will be held overseas because of security concerns since it coincides with the country's general elections, organizers said Sunday.
Some players and officials had expressed concerns about playing on the subcontinent after this month's terrorist attack on Sri Lanka's cricket team in Lahore, Pakistan. India was also the victim of a terror attack in Mumbai in November which left 164 people dead. Shashank Manohar, India's cricket chief, said organizers were looking for a venue outside India after the government refused to approve the tournament schedule because security forces would be occupied with the elections. The 59-match tournament is to be held April 10 to May 24, while the elections for the lower house of India's Parliament will take place across the country in five different phases between April 16 and May 13. Indian officials said they have begun talks with the England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket South Africa about the possibility of one of them hosting the tournament. League chairman Lalit Modi said he was hopeful of announcing the venue and final schedule Monday. Indian Premier League 2008Indian Premier League 2008
RR v CSK, IPL Final, Mumbai: Rajasthan win inaugural IPLJune 01, 2008
Yusuf Pathan inspired Rajasthan Royals to a three-wicket defeat of Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling Indian Premier League final on Sunday. He took three wickets to reduce Chennai, who lost the toss and were put into bat, to 163 for five, and then smashed 56 - including four sixes and three fours - in a 39-ball innings. Needing eight runs off the final over, Shane Warne (nine not out) and Sohail Tanvir (nine no) kept their cool to reach the target, with the latter grabbing the one run needed for victory off the final ball of the match. The Royals suffered a double blow as in the same over Kamran Akmal (six) went for a suicidal single after nudging to mid-on and was run out by Makhaya Ntini's direct hit. Pathan proved he was just as capable with the bat as with the ball, although he was lucky to be dropped by Raina in the 11th over on 13. Raina's error proved costly as Pathan went on to smash Muttiah Muralitharan for back-to-back sixes. Shane Watson chipped in with a quickfire 28 off 19 balls but succumbed when he came down the track to Muralitharan but missed and was bowled. Needing 52 off the last five overs, Pathan launched Lakshmipathy Balaji for 12 off one over and then dished out the same treatment to Muralitharan, hoisting the spinner over midwicket to bring up his half century. But Mohammad Kaif then lobbed Muralitharan to Mahendra Singh Dhoni at cover and Ravindra Jadeja followed next ball when he pulled Morkel straight to Kapugedera at mid-on. Rajasthan's hopes were knocked when Pathan was run out by Raina's superb direct hit but Warne and Tanvir steered the Royals to victory. Earlier, Chennai openers Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan and Parthiv Patel put on 39 before the former was dismissed in the sixth over. He tried to pull Pathan over deep midwicket but mistimed it and was caught by Jadeja sprinting in from the boundary. Aiming for a flurry of runs in the final few overs, Raina tried one shot too many and was caught on the long-off boundary by Jadeja off the bowling of Watson, and Chamara Kapugedera did not last long, adding just eight runs before lofting to Asnodkar at long on off Tanvir.
