Indian Premier League - IPL

KXP v MI, IPL Match 10, Mohali: Sangakkara steers Kings XI Punjab to first IPL victory

Kumar Sangakkara's confident 94-run knock coupled with disciplined bowling fashioned Kings XI Punjab's 66-run victory over Mumbai Indians in their Indian Premier League match at Mohali Friday.
Sangakkara missed out on a well deserved century but propelled his team to a competitive 182, after being sent to bat by the rival skipper. The hosts then restricted their opponents to 116 for 9 in their quota of 20 overs with Chawla coming up with a brilliant four-over spell, in which he claimed two wickets.
Brett Lee also produced exceptional figures of 4-0-9-1 while Irfan chipped in with two wickets in his team's first victory in the tournament. Mumbai Indians' run chase was far from ideal with both the openers making an early exit courtesy brilliance of Australian paceman Lee.
The fast bowler removed dangerous Sanath Jayasuriya (1) with a superb catch off his own bowling and then effected Luke Ronchi's run out with an athletic fielding in the third over. West Indian Dwayne Bravo (23) and Robin Uthappa (21) then did the spade work, lifting the visitors with a 47-run third-wicket partnership.
But the duo went back to the pavillion in a gap of four runs, dealing severe blows to the hopes of the Mumbai team. Rookie Piyush Chawla clean bowled Bravo and local boy VRV Singh had Uthappa caught at short mid-wicket to give another blow to visitors hopes.
The visitors paid the price of not building partnerships as batsmen succumbed to pressure of soaring run-rate and plunged to their third successive defeat.

KXP v MI, IPL Match 10, Mohali: Yuvraj, Harbhajan would be eager to open account in IPL

With no certain word still on Sachin Tendulkar's Indian Premier League debut on Friday, Kings XI Punjab will be eager to take the opportunity to clinch an elusive win at home turf against Mumbai Indians at Mohali.
The Yuvraj Singh-led Punjab team, having lost both its matches -- against Chennai Super Kings here and Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur, is bound to be under pressure to record a victory as it will be again playing before their home crowd. Though Yuvraj is one of the dangerous batsman in this format of the game, he is yet to unleash his real firepower for which he is known. He scored 23 and 57 in his previous two matches.
Other top batsman Mahela Jayawardene is also yet to prove himself while his compatriot Kumar Sangakkara would wish to play a big knock on Friday. Punjab's other problem are its strike bowlers, who are yet to live up to their reputation.
Mumbai Indians, who are also yet to score a win, will be hoping that Sri Lankan veteran Sanath Jayasuriya plays a big knock as he has so far scored just 49 runs in his two outings. Besides, if Tendulkar, Mumbai Indians regular captain currently recuperating from his groin injury, is fit to play Friday, it will definitely add to the firepower of the team, also including Robin Uthappa and West Indian Dwayne Bravo.
